$63,000 Raised for Minneapolis Food Shelves

Second annual event surpasses fundraising goals; bests prior year by 66 percent

The 2009 Taste of Lake Street for Minneapolis Hunger Relief, held on Oct. 4, raised $63,000 for Minneapolis food shelves – a 66 percent increase over last year’s inaugural event (which netted $38,000). In partnership with presenting sponsor Midtown Global Market, Taste of Lake Street was organized by the six Rotary and Rotaract clubs of Minneapolis.

“Taste of Lake Street was a win-win for all who participated,” said Lou Burdick, event chair and past president of the Minneapolis University Rotary Club. “It raised greatly needed funds for Minneapolis food shelves at a time of critical need, it presented Midtown Global Market and Lake Street-area restaurants with the chance to offer their finest food to new audiences, and it provided event attendees with an enormously fun, filling and fulfilling way to benefit the community.”

The 2009 Taste of Lake Street featured cuisine from 40 Lake Street-area restaurants, wine and beer, family-friendly entertainment and music, a silent auction and raffle. An event highlight was the auction of an original oil painting by renowned Minneapolis artist Jason Najarak, who created and donated a Minneapolis cityscape specifically for Taste of Lake Street. The event also directly provided more than 340 pounds of food, brought by attendees, to a local food shelf.

All net proceeds from Taste of Lake Street will go directly to food shelves in Minneapolis selected by the sponsoring Rotary and Rotaract clubs
